Recording Your Set with Serato DJ Pro

Recording in Serato DJ Pro is intuitive and simple. The Recording panel controls are explained in detail in the Recording Audio section of the user manual.
Each of the sections below details how to record with a different Serato-compatible hardware device category.

Recordings are saved in the following directories, by default, however you can change this in the Recording panel, by clicking Rec Location, and choosing an alternative directory:

  • Windows: C:\Users\USERNAMEHERE\Music\_Serato_\Recording
  • macOS: Mac>Users>USERNAMEHERE>Music>_Serato_>Recording
  • Serato DJ Pro: In the Recorded crate

Additionally, Recorded files are automatically split when the recording exceeds 3 hours (16-bit) or 1 hour 50 minutes (24-bit). Recordings are saved as 24-bit by default.

Recording with a Mixer or Controller

Most Serato-compatible mixers & controller allow for easy recording in Serato DJ Pro.

To record with your Serato-compatible Mixer:

  1. Connect your Mixer with a USB cable to your PC, as you would normally, and launch Serato DJ Pro
  2. Click the REC button in Serato DJ Pro, to open the Recording panel
  3. Set the Record input source drop-down, in the Recording panel to Mix
  4. Test that your record levels aren't clipping, by playing a loud section of your mix, then adjusting the Record input gain control - if required
  5. When you are ready, press the REC button in the Recording panel, and start your mix
  6. When you are finished recording your mix, name it (i.e."mixtape 1") by tying into the File name field and press the Save button

Recording using an Interface

Serato DJ Pro interfaces like the Reloop Flux require a few more steps in order to record, as audio is mixed by the mixer your interface is connected to, so you'll need to return an audio output from that mixer, back into a spare channel input, on the interface.

In the example below, we suggest you use the DECK3/AUX input for this purpose, but you can use any of the three inputs on the Reloop Flux, that you aren't using to mix with.

To record with your Reloop Flux:

  1. Connect the Reloop Flux inputs and outputs to DECK 1 & DECK 2, leaving the DECK3/AUX input spare, and a USB cable from the Flux to your PC, then launch Serato DJ Pro
  2. Connect an RCA cable from a spare output on your mixer, usually labelled BOOTH, MASTER 2 or REC OUT, to the DECK3/AUX input on the Reloop Flux ensuring it’s SOURCE DECK PHONO/LINE dip switch is set to LINE
  3. Set the Record input source drop-down, in the Recording panel to CHANNEL 3 (AUX)

Recording exceptions

The following guides explain exceptions to the steps above or limitations that affect certain hardware due to their software integration and hardware audio routing:

Discontinued devices

RANE SL2

Because the SL 2 only has Left and Right inputs, you will need to use another audio program to record as the audio is mixed and blended outside of the software (inside your DJ mixer).

There are several recording programs you can use such as Audacity (free) or Ableton Live (paid, for more advanced options).

You will need:

  • 1 x SL2
  • 4 x RCA cables
  • 1 x USB cable
  • 1 x computer with Line input (unless you have an external soundcard you wish to use)
  • 1 x Stereo RCA to 3.5mm mini jack cable

To record:

  1. Setup your SL 2 like you would normally and launch Serato DJ Pro.
  2. Connect the Stereo RCA to 3.5mm mini jack cable from an additional output from your DJ mixer (i.e. booth, record, 2nd master) into the line input of your computer (or your external soundcard)
  3. Set the record source in your recording program to "line".
  4. Check the record settings/preferences are set to stereo 44.1 kHz and 16bits (more if you desire).
Test there is audio coming into the recording program and check the levels aren't going above zero dB on the recording channel.
  5. When you are ready, press record in your recording software, and start your mix.
  6. When you are finished, make sure you stop the recording, and save the mix to a location of your choice.

NOTE: Because of the extra strain on your laptop's RAM and CPU while running Serato DJ Pro and a recording program together, users with older computers may want to use another computer to record the mix, if you are able to.

RANE SL3

With the SL 3 you can use the AUX input to record your set using Serato DJ Pro. Set up Serato DJ Pro normally with your DJ setup and laptop.

NOTE: Make sure to set the AUX channels dip switch on the hardware to line level when recording.

  • 1 x USB cable
  • 1 x laptop

To record:

  1. Setup your DJ equipment like you would normally and launch Serato DJ Pro
  2. Connect the RCA cable from an additional output from your DJ mixer (i.e. 'booth' or 'record' or '2nd master') into the AUX input of your SL 3
  3. Open the REC tab in Serato DJ Pro
  4. Set the record source in Serato DJ Pro to "Channel 3".
  5. Test that your record levels aren't clipping (you can use the Gain knob to adjust this level)
  6. When you are ready, press the red Record icon in Serato DJ Pro, and start your mix
  7. When you are finished, type a file name (i.e."mixtape 1") into the Filename box and press the Save icon. Remember to enter a filename, otherwise your recording will be lost if you press 'Record' again before saving
