Misc : MIDI Mapping Mode

MIDI Mapping Mode allows you to map software functions to your connected MIDI device, or remap functions on devices that already have a default mapping in Serato Studio.

MIDI assignments are saved with your project and are automatically carried over to the next project.

Use the Save Project with Default Template option to preserve the MIDI mapping for your favorite MIDI device, which is important if you plan to make multiple mappings for a specific device.

For all MIDI functions described below, ensure your MIDI hardware is connected, and it is enabled as a MIDI Device via Setup > MIDI

Assign a MIDI control

  1. In the main Studio interface, click the MIDI Mapping Mode button in the upper left-hand corner:
    MIDI - toggle ON.gif
  2. Click on a control in the Serato Studio interface to assign a control, and move or press the desired hardware control when prompted, to confirm the mapping:MIDI - Assign SWING.gif
  3. Repeat step 2 for any subsequent controls and then click the MIDI Mapping Mode button to disable the mode and finish mapping.

NOTE:

  • Some MIDI assignments are context sensitive. For instance, if you map a knob on your MIDI device to adjust Gain on a Deck, it will only affect the currently selected Deck, not the specific one you assigned it to earlier.
  • Some MIDI assignments are shared. For instance, if you map Scene Play to a button on your MIDI device, it will also trigger Song Play, if the Song View is in focus.

Unassign a MIDI control

  1. In the main Studio interface, click the MIDI Mapping Mode button in the upper left-hand corner:
    MIDI - toggle ON.gif
  2. Click on a control in the Serato Studio interface that has already been assigned to a MIDI device control, and then, when prompted hit Enter on your keyboard:

Overwrite or Add additional mapping

  1. In the main Studio interface, click the MIDI Mapping Mode button in the upper left-hand corner:
    MIDI - toggle ON.gif
  2. Then either:
    • Click on a control in the Serato Studio interface that has already been assigned to a MIDI device control, and turn or press another MIDI device control.
When prompted, use Overwrite, by pressing the O key on your keyboard, to remove the previous mapping and create a new mapping for that MIDI device control.
    • Click on a control in the Serato Studio interface without an existing MIDI assignment and turn or press a MIDI device control with an existing MIDI assignment.
When prompted, use Add addition mapping, by pressing the A key on your keyboard, to add another MIDI device control to that Serato Studio interface control and have one MIDI device control, affect two software functions.MIDI - Overwrite-Add SWING.gif

MIDI Data type & Reversed

Some Serato Studio controls (usually those with knobs or faders) allow you to change the Data type & Reversed MIDI parameters after assignment, which may be necessary depending on the MIDI sent by your connected MIDI device.

You may need to experiment with the different MIDI Data type modes if your MIDI device assignment doesn’t control the Serato Studio function as expected.

  • The Absolute data type represents a direct correlation in the software to the physical position of the respective control on the MIDI controller.
For example, if a knob is set to 2 o’clock on the MIDI controller, then it will also be set to 2 o'clock in Serato Studio.
  • The Relative data type modes tell Serato Studio how to interpret continuous MIDI data, which is commonly used for MIDI knobs that have an endless encoder.
You should try each of the Relative data type modes until you have found the mode which works best for the MIDI device control you are assigning.

The Reversed parameter simply inverts the assigned MIDI values, so a knob when physically turned clockwise, would turn its Serato Studio assigned knob, counterclockwise, for example.

  1. In the main Studio interface, click the MIDI Mapping Mode button in the upper left-hand corner:
    MIDI - toggle ON.gif
  2. Then:
    • To change the Data type mode, press C on your keyboard, after mousing over a Serato Studio control you have successfully assigned to a MIDI control.
    • To turn on the Reversed parameter, press TAB on your keyboard, after mousing over a Serato Studio control you have successfully assigned to a MIDI control.

MIDI output lighting

If your MIDI device has support for pads or buttons with basic MIDI output lighting, this will be enabled by default, for software buttons or pads.

You can toggle this off, or on:

  1. In the main Studio interface, click the MIDI Mapping Mode button in the upper left-hand corner:
    MIDI - toggle ON.gif
  2. Then, mouseover an assigned, compatible MIDI control, and press L on your keyboard:
    MIDI - Lighting ON-OFF.gif

MIDI controls

When enabling the MIDI Mapping Mode, several additional MIDI controls will appear in place of your library, at the bottom of the screen.

Here you will find several controls that do not appear in the main user interface, as well as select library controls, for MIDI mapping assignment.

If you need to map functions in the Song View, you can hide MIDI Controls, and return back to them when finished:
