When you use Serato DJ for iOS with supported DVS hardware, you can control playback with Control Vinyl or Control CDs. There are four playback modes:
- Absolute Mode (ABS)
- Relative Mode (REL)
- Internal Mode (INT)
- Through Mode (THRU)
NOTE: DVS requires Serato DJ Suite. Make sure you're signed in to your Serato account in Serato DJ for iOS.
Turning On DVS
When you connect a DVS mixer or DVS interface, DVS turns on automatically. When you connect a controller that supports DVS, DVS is off by default.
To turn it on, tap the cog icon, then go to Advanced Settings > Digital Vinyl System and turn on Enable DVS:
NOTE: Turning DVS on or off can briefly interrupt audio. A message asks you to confirm before the change is made.
Choosing a Playback Mode
When DVS is on and supported DVS hardware is connected, the mode selector appears at the bottom left of each Virtual Deck. Tap it to choose a mode:
Absolute Mode
ABS works most like regular vinyl. The start of the track is mapped to the start of the record. Lift the needle and drop it elsewhere on the record to move to that point in the track.
ABS follows every movement of your Control Vinyl or Control CD, including stops, starts, scratching, needle dropping, and other turntablist techniques.
NOTE: In Absolute Mode, your Control Vinyl or Control CD controls playback. You can't scratch the main waveform or tap the overview waveform to move through the track.
Relative Mode
REL follows the forward and backward movement of the record, but not the needle's position. This turns off needle dropping and lets you scratch without skipping.
In REL, you can tap the overview waveform to jump to a new position in the track.
NOTE: Relative Mode is the default the first time you connect supported DVS hardware.
To use needle dropping in Relative Mode, go to Advanced Settings > Digital Vinyl System > Needle Drop in REL Mode and choose an option:
- Absolute: moves the playhead to match the needle position.
- Cue Point: moves the playhead to the matching Cue Point.
-
Off: needle dropping is ignored.
Internal Mode
INT lets Serato DJ for iOS control playback instead of your Control Vinyl or Control CD. In INT, you can use the on-screen Play button, scratch the main waveform, tap the overview waveform to jump to a new position, and nudge the track to adjust its timing.
If your Control Vinyl or Control CD runs out of control signal in ABS or REL, the deck switches to Internal Mode automatically. Your track keeps playing at the same tempo. To switch back, place the needle in the lead-in of your Control Vinyl.
NOTE: If your hardware has its own input switch, you can also put a channel into Through Mode using the switch.
