If you are experiencing issues using iTunes with macOS 10.14 Mojave or below please use the troubleshooting steps here: Troubleshooting iTunes
NOTE: macOS Catalina introduces a change in name to the Apple application formerly known as iTunes - this application is now called 'Music'. Within Serato DJ software, we will still refer to Apple's Music application as 'iTunes'.
Setting up Apple's Music application (formerly known as iTunes)
Setting up Apple's Music application (formerly known as iTunes) with Serato DJ Pro or Serato DJ Lite software on macOS 10.15 Catalina or later, is a simple process.
If you have recently updated to a current version of macOS, from an older version, you should find that the new Apple Music application (formerly known as iTunes) will read the contents of your old iTunes library, after it's converted to a 'Music' library. This process can take some time however, and it maybe useful to read more about this process in our Apple Music - Why do my tracks take so long to load into Serato DJ Pro & Lite? article.
If you're starting a new library, and wish to your import your music into the Apple Music application it is as simple as either dragging the files into the Apple Music application library from macOS' Finder, or by using the import files dialogue in the Apple Music application itself: File (menu bar drop down) > Add to Library...
NOTE: Files from the Apple Music streaming service are not supported in Serato DJ Pro or Serato DJ Lite. See the section entitled "Why can't I see my Apple Music streaming files in Serato DJ Pro or Serato DJ Lite" below for more information.
Before importing your music, you will need to ensure that the Music application (iTunes) library organisation is set up correctly.
If you let the Music application (iTunes) organise all your music for you, artist or album names can cause the files to become "missing" as the original file's name could not be found. Please make sure the following preferences are set correctly:
Music application preferences are found under: "Music" (menu bar dropdown) > "Preferences..." > "Files".
-
Uncheck "Keep Music Media Folder organised"
If you have this checked, the Music application (iTunes) will shift your files to a new location (putting them in folders of Artist and Album Name), creating issues with missing files in Serato DJ software. Unchecking this will stop the Music application (iTunes) from doing so, and thus making the integration between the Music application (iTunes) and Serato DJ software a more seamless experience. -
Uncheck "Copy files to Music Media Folder when adding to library"
This will stop the Music application (iTunes) from creating duplicates of your Audio Files when importing them into the Music application (iTunes). Having this option ON could cause doubles to show within the Serato software and it will also take up more space on your computer since the Music application (iTunes) will be copying the music to its own library rather than reading the file from the location on your hard drive.
Setting up Serato DJ Pro & Serato DJ Lite software
Once you have set up your library in Apple's Music application (formerly known as iTunes), simply ensure Show iTunes Library is checked via Setup > Library + Display.
NOTE: Within Serato DJ Pro & Lite software, we continue refer to Apple's Music application as 'iTunes'.
You will need to be using Serato DJ Pro & Serato DJ Lite software that is compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina, macOS 11 Big Sur or macOS 12 Monterey.
- You can find the latest version of Serato DJ Pro here: https://serato.com/dj/pro/downloads
- You can find the latest version of Serato DJ Lite here: https://serato.com/dj/lite/downloads
NOTE: The Music application library may take a longer to load than expected in Serato DJ software so please be patient when waiting for it to load.
Why can't I see my Apple Music streaming files in Serato DJ Pro or Serato DJ Lite?
Files from the Apple Music streaming service that is exclusive to iTunes and iOS devices are not supported in Serato DJ Pro or Serato DJ Lite. Files from this streaming service are DRM protected, and won't be playable in any other software, hence why these files do not show in Serato DJ Pro or Serato DJ Lite software.
A full list of supported file types can be found here.
