At WWDC 2019 on June 3rd 2019, Apple announced that it would be discontinuing iTunes, in favour of 3 new apps, that would offer functionality previously covered in iTunes.
What does this mean for the music in my iTunes library?
Apple has advised that it will 'sunset' iTunes, and re-introduce this functionality in a new application called 'Music' that will arrive with the release of macOS 10.15 Catalina.
NOTE: None of the changes below will take effect until macOS 10.15 Catalina is released, around the end of the 3rd quarter, in 2019.
Apple has also advised:
- Existing iTunes libraries will be imported in their entirety into the new Music application, including not just iTunes purchased music, but any CDs or digital files imported from other sources
- Music will continue to playback local files and is not just limited to streaming from the Apple Music service
- Syncing iTunes libraries will be handled by macOS Finder, instead of Music (or previously, the iTunes application)
- iTunes for Windows will not be changing (at least for now)
Any impact for Serato users?
At this point, it seems the change is more about product positioning and branding, rather than removing functionality. As such, we do not anticipate any major issues.
When will we know more?
We are currently looking into our iTunes integration with the developer BETA of macOS 10.15 Catalina. We will continue to update users as we know more.
